Q & A with Luke Perry By Sophia Ahmad • Photos Available Here
I met up with Luke Perry at the Des Moines Art Center where he was shooting for Sam Steele and the Junior Detective Agency. He will be in town for just a few more days. Things he wouldn’t talk about: his role on 90210, the new 90210 and his kids. Though at the end of the interview, when signing my ‘love note,’ he whispered, “My daughter’s name is Sophia.” I told him he has a lot of Twitter fans. He’s not on Twitter, (”I’m not that into technology,”) he said. We also chatted about classical music. He likes Bach, Beethoven, Wagner. Wooh! I told him I play piano. He wishes he could play, but he likes to listen for now. I asked the crew about Luke. They said he was a really nice guy, laid back, not demanding at all. Sorry folks, no dirt to dig up on him.
Sophia: Can you tell us a bit about your role in this movie?
Luke: I am a jewel thief, I am the bad guy, it reminds me of movies I saw when I was a kid. Jake, the boy who plays Sam Steele junior is great. It’s a sweet script, an easy read. I want to make some stuff my kids can watch. (Perry has two kids.)
Sophia: Tell us about your time in Des Moines so far.
Luke: I haven't seen much of it, but I love the city so far. That riverwalk is great. Everyone’s talking about big cities. We have enough big cities. This is a fabulous mid-sized city that has a lot to offer…(It’d be great) to keep the city in check. I am a Buckeye fan, it (Iowa) reminds me a lot of Ohio, where I grew up. A lot of corn, a lot of trees.
Sophia: What projects have you been working on lately?
Luke: I just spent the last two month coaching little league. We made it to the championships, where we lost. (Team name is the Cardinals.)
Sophia: Any more movies in the works?
Luke: I don't know for sure. I’ve read over a few things. I’m not as driven to do things as I was when I was younger. I don’t really want to go away for too long on anything.
Sophia: Anything else you’d like to add?
Luke: I'd like to say hello to my former alegebra teacher, Dr. Fagen. She teaches math at Drake.
